Jonathan Loriaux, an e-mail blogger, is waging war on e-mail campaigns sent with a "no-reply" address and is warning companies that use this method. Sarbacane Software interviewed him to explain his approach:
Can you introduce yourself?
I have been working in the world of emailing for over 6 years, first as a campaign architect (on the technical side) and then I gradually moved to the marketing side. In 2009, I created the blog Badsender.com which deals with various topics concerning emailing. Badsender is also my consulting activity in emailing strategy and ECRM (Electronic Consumer Relationship Management).
What is a no-reply address?
A no-reply email address is wordpress web design agency primarily intended to dissuade a consumer from responding to an email. It is generally an email address that does not exist , meaning that it is not linked to any real mailbox.
For example: noreply@mysite.com or nepasrepondre@mysite.com .
Why do companies use no-reply addresses?
When asked, companies cite various reasons for using a no-reply address: fear of increasing the number of contact points, difficulty in classifying requests arriving by email, fear of overloading customer service, etc.
But in general, the no-reply email address is used because there was no thought given to the subject when creating the email program and very often, this strategy is never thoroughly re-evaluated since.
What are the consequences for companies that use it?
Using a no-reply email address is not dramatic at all!
On the other hand, using a real address in emails is very, very simple and can potentially have very positive effects !
Allowing a consumer to respond directly to a newsletter is an opportunity to create a discussion between them and the brand. Today, more and more companies are investing considerable sums in their Facebook strategy while forgetting the media that generates the majority of their traffic. Considering emailing as a close relative of social networks offers very interesting possibilities for interactions.
Does using this address have any impact on campaign deliverability?
Again, using a no-reply address does not have a significant impact on deliverability. On the contrary, encouraging responses to emails by not using no-reply is extremely positive for campaign deliverability .
The more your newsletters resemble, in terms of interactions, an email exchanged between two people who are having a discussion, the better the deliverability of your campaigns will be.
Hence the importance of setting up a no-reply war with the site checkthis.com/no-reply-war ?
The #noreplywar was set up to send a very simple message. Emailing is a powerful medium and to make it so powerful, there is no need to invest millions of euros. You have to take a step back, get your head above water and look around you.
No-reply addresses are one example, there will probably be more in the coming months on Badsender.com !
Thanks to Jonathan for accepting this interview for our blog and taking the time to answer us.
