When women enter the prison system, they usually face a context that places them in a vulnerable situation , as evidenced by the lack of exclusive infrastructure for them, as well as adequate medical services, overcrowding, overcrowding, prostitution, and no guarantees. of social reintegration. Furthermore, the stay is complicated when the woman is a mother, since it is impossible for her to parent free of violence.
According to the INEGI, at the end of 2021 the number of women deprived of liberty who were pregnant and/or breastfeeding was 356 nationwide. Additionally, 384 women were registered who had their sons and daughters under six years of age with them.
As if that were not enough, it is estimated that more Chinese American Phone Number List than 340 girls and boys live in prison with their mothers, and as is presumed, the nature of the prison environment contributes to the fact that the first years of life of these girls and boys are marked by precariousness. The most vulnerable populations in this sense are girls, boys, adolescents, young people and mothers, a sector that, at Reinserta, we have been working on since 2013.
Violence-free parenting: The work of Reinserta
Reinserta is a leading NGO in Mexico that works on the reconstruction of the social fabric through the continuous development of a culture of peace by implementing psycho-social care models for girls, boys and adolescents who have been exposed to traumatic situations derived from contact with the criminal justice system. Such work is not easy, in fact it has required the participation of private initiative, as has been the case of the Pablo Landsmanas Foundation .
One of the main objectives of Reinserta and its allies is to work on having an upbringing free of violence. According to UNICEF , violence, in any of its forms, is a violation of rights that has multiple negative consequences on the well-being and development of children. For this reason, we seek to promote protective environments for them within penitentiary centers.
Faced with this reality, Reinserta has strengthened the “Childhood and Prison” care model , which is responsible for working through established work axes with girls and boys who are born and live in prison along with their mothers, who are deprived of freedom.
“What we seek from the “Childhood and Prison” model is that boys and girls who live inside prisons have their rights guaranteed and the experience closest to what a childhood would have outside of it.”
Elizabeth Alvarado, Reinserta Collaborator and Coordinator of the “Childhood and Prison” Program in Nuevo León.
With the creation of this area, it has been possible to provide workshops on early stimulation and child development, as well as violence-free parenting and parenting skills. In addition, it focuses on the dignification of spaces so that mothers and infants can live in dignified and safe conditions.
Boys and girls who live in prisons do not have the same stimuli and experiences as those who are outside of it. Thanks to Reinserta's programs and workshops, they are given that proximity to the world so that their stay within the prison system is not an impediment to their development when they leave.
However, Reinserta's work does not end there, since another of the obstacles that has been found is the lack of attention in the field of nutrition for minors, which is why the Pablo Landsmanas Foundation has been key to complying the proposed objectives in favor of mothers deprived of liberty.
Pablo Landsmanas Foundation; indispensable support
The Pablo Landsmanas Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Corporativo Kosmos —Mexico's largest group of companies in food services—which seeks to create a positive difference with society, and is what has driven it to generate this alliance for good food within the penitentiary centers supported by Reinserta.
Having favorable foods for the development of girls and boys is essential. However, the problem arises when mothers are not allowed to work. This makes it difficult for them to have an income to buy food that the minors require, so, in addition to having a violence-free upbringing, support is required in this regard.
That is why the Pablo Landsmanas Foundation makes food donations throughout the year. In this way, mothers in prison have the possibility of preparing the meals their babies need, and feel calm knowing that they are nourishing them correctly, since the food provided by the foundation is of high quality.
Rewarding work in support of the SDGs
This food delivery, in addition to promoting violence-free parenting and respecting the rights of girls and boys, contributes to the fulfillment of one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals ( SDGs ); This is SDG 2 , which seeks to end hunger by 2030 and ensure access for all people to healthy, nutritious and sufficient food throughout the year, particularly the poorest and people in situations vulnerable such as infants.
It is worth mentioning that this work, in addition to supporting a vulnerable sector, leaves great satisfaction for those who carry it out. According to Ana Favela, Coordinator of the “Childhood and Prison” program in CDMX and the State of Mexico, comments:
“It is a rewarding job, it is very nice to work with children to be actors who intervene in their development and foster the bond with their mothers.”
